Verifying Chinese steel suppliers for buyers in Kenya

Kenyan buyers importing through Mombasa carry a long inland leg and a competitive resale market. A specification that drifts at the factory is expensive to correct after clearance, so verification before shipment pays for itself.

What is different about buying steel into Kenya

Kenya's steel market is price-sensitive and resale-driven. Coil and pipe are bought on specification and sold on quality, which means a single off-spec lot does damage beyond its own value: it affects the reputation of the distributor who sold it.

The inland leg from Mombasa to Nairobi and beyond adds cost and time, and it makes correcting a mistake after clearance disproportionately expensive. Verification before the container is sealed is the cheapest point in the whole chain to catch a problem.

Products Kenyan buyers most often verify

  • Galvanized steel coil — roofing sheet substrate, where coating mass and spangle drive the finished product.
  • PPGI and PPGL coil — colour-coated roofing, where batch colour consistency is visible on every roof.
  • Steel pipe and fittings — water, borehole and structural applications.
  • Structural sections and hollow sections for fabrication and construction.

Practical points on the buying side

  • Pre-shipment inspection. The most valuable single control point is a third-party inspection before the container is sealed, not a complaint after arrival.
  • Specification in writing. Coating mass, grade and tolerance agreed in both languages, so there is something to inspect against.
  • Packing. Long sea transit and inland haulage both stress coil wrapping and pipe bundling; packing standard should be specified, not assumed.
  • Payment. We do not hold or transfer payment. LC and contract terms remain between you, your bank and the supplier.

How we verify a supplier for a Kenyan buyer

We go to the plant in Tangshan or the surrounding Hebei belt, film a continuous walkthrough, check identity, equipment, stock and activity against the site, and write an English report you can forward to your bank, your insurer or your own customers.

Because many Kenyan orders combine coil with pipe or fittings, tell us the full package at the quoting stage. It is common for the coil to come from a verified mill and the fittings from a workshop nobody has seen.

Questions buyers ask

Kenyan buyer questions

Can you coordinate SGS or Bureau Veritas inspection for Kenya?

Yes. We can book and attend a pre-shipment inspection with an independent body and make sure you receive the report. Their fee is separate from ours and is quoted by them.

Do you handle KEBS or customs documentation?

No. Compliance with Kenyan import requirements is a matter for you, your clearing agent and the exporter. We verify the supplier and the goods, not the customs file.

Is a video inspection enough, or do we need a site visit?

For a first order from a new supplier, a site visit is stronger. For a repeat order from a verified plant, a recorded walkthrough plus a pre-shipment inspection is often enough.
